Lyle Cherry Orchard 10/2/11

Find this trail on the Washington side by driving East on I-84 to Hood River (exit 63) and crossing the bridge over the Columbia River (75 cents).  Turn right (East) on SR-14 to Lyle.  Just after leaving Lyle, you will go through a tunnel and the parking area is just after the tunnel on the left.

The trail goes up and soon you are on a bench where you can walk out to a view of the Columbia (looking East here).  There is no rail - step carefully!

Continuing up slope through Oak and Poison Oak

To another viewpoint with my anonymous hiking partner.

On top there is a plateau with grassland and basalt formations

And a lot of yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis), an invasive plant from Eurasia that is taking over native grasslands in several Western states.   Mr. Thornsby does not approve.

Poison Oak adds color to the landscape

That's a big burrito! (Everybody's Brewpub in White Salmon, WA)
